Two militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (TRF) were killed in an early morning encounter at Zakura area of Srinagar, police said Saturday.

As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Kashmir Zone Police in a tweet quouting IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar, said, ” 02 militants of militant outfit LeT/TRF neutralised by Srinagar Police. One of the killed militants Ikhlaq Hajam was involved in recent killing of HC Ali Mohd at Hassanpora Anantnag. Incriminating materials including 02 pistols recovered”.

A soldier was killed and another injured when a truck hit them near Fruit Mandi at Parimpora Srinagar on Saturday, officials said.

The soldiers—Sanjay Kumar and Rafiq Ahmad— were part of a Road Opening Party (RoP) when the incident took place early morning, the officials told GNS.

They said both the soldiers from 163 Territorial Army were shifted to hospital where Sanjay Kumar was declared brought dead on arrival by the doctors while Rafiq Ahmad has been admitted and is presently under treatment.

A police official told GNS that driver left the truck (JKO3J /3811) at the spot but fled from the spot. He said a case has been registered and further investigations are underway. (GNS)

A youth in his early 20s was shot dead inside his house in Budhal area of Rajouri district during the night, officials said on Saturday.

They said unknown gunman fired from window of his room while he was sleeping at around 4 a.m. today. The fire hit the head of the youth identified as Ikram Hussain Shah son of Ali Shah, leading to on the spot death.

Also, they said, bullet was fired at the house of another person, Nabu Shah, some 20 meters from the house of the youth in Targayi village of Budhal area.

Official sources said that a police party headed by SHO Budhal Mustaj Ahmed visited the spot immediately while area has been cordoned off.

Jammu and Kashmir reported 1429 new coronavirus cases, lowest in 24 days, while three persons succumbed to the virus during the last 24 hours, officials said on Friday.

They said 607 of the fresh cases were confirmed from Jammu Division and 822 from Kashmir valley, taking the overall case tally to 443891.

They said that case tally was lowest in the last 24 days as 1148 infections were reported on January 11 last.

Giving district-wise details, they said, Srinagar reported 266 cases, Baramulla 108, Budgam 86, Pulwama 34, Kupwara 55, Anantnag 64, Bandipora 47, Ganderbal 45, Kulgam 96, Shopian 21, Jammu 228, Udhampur 53, Rajouri 12, Doda 135, Kathua 60, Samba 4, Kishtwar 47, Poonch 19, Ramban 26 and Reasi 23.

A number of the cases were confirmed at diagnostic laboratories associated with GMC Srinagar and GMC Anantnag.

Regarding the fresh fatalities, the officials told GNS that one was reported from Jammu division and two from Kashmir valley. So far 4702 people have died due to the virus—2300 in Jammu and 2402 in Kashmir Valley.

Besides, they said, 4057 Covid-19 patients recovered during the time— 1437 from Jammu Division and 2620 from Kashmir. So far 415109 people have recovered, leaving the active case tally at 24080—6851 in Jammu and 17229 in Kashmir.

They said there was no new confirmed case of mucormycosis (black fungus) reported today. So far 51 black fungus cases have been confirmed in J&K, the officials said. They also informed that 48961 doses of covid-19 vaccine were administered during the time in J&K. (GNS)

At least a dozen people were questioned by Cyber Police Kashmir on Friday for allegedly sharing the Srinagar acid victim’s photos on social media sites.

An official of Cyber Police said that these people were called for enquiring why they shared Srinagar acid victims pictures on social media handles.

The official said “majority of those summoned for questioning were minors.”

He said they were all released after proper counselling by the Cyber Police officials.

Earlier, Cyber Police appealed to people to refrain from sharing the acid victim’s photo on social media platforms.

In the appeal, police also said those who will be found sharing the sufferers’ images will be taken to task.

The Cyber Police officer reiterated its appeal to people, saying not to share such content on their social media sites especially these sensitive pictures or the victim’s name and address.

The officer said that there are also Supereme Court guidelines that no person can print or publish the victim in print, electronic, social media, etc.

The name of the victim, or even in a remote manner, discloses any facts which can lead to the victim’s being identified and which should make her identity known to the public at large.

Pertinently, scores of people were sharing the pictures of the Srinagar acid victim who was attacked by her “ex-fiance” on Tuesday evening in the Wantpora area when she was returning home from work.

The 24-year-old girl is currently being treated at SMHS Srinagar, where she is battling for her life.

The attack on the 24-year-old girl sparked widespread public outrage, and several political parties, students, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and social activists took to the streets in solidarity with the victim, demanding capital punishment to the accused.

Barring Srinagar and Qazigund, the minimum temperature stayed below freezing point in Kashmir Valley with the famous tourist resort of Gulmarg recording a low of minus 12.0°C on Friday, officials said.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Gulmarg had 1.6mm of rainfall in 24 hours till 0830 hours today even as it recorded a low of minus 12.0°C against minus 6.0°C on the previous night, he said. The temperature was 4.4°C below normal for this time of the year in the famous resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Srinagar, the summer capital of the J&K, had 4.8mm of rain while it recorded a low of 1.6°C against last night’s 0.6°C, he said.

Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, had 6mm of rain during the time while it recorded a low of 0.2°C against minus 2.1°C on the previous night, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded 5.5 cms of snowfall and had a low of minus 1.1°C against minus 1.0°C on the previous night, the official said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, had 11.1cms of snowfall while it recorded a low of minus 3.4°C against minus 1.7°C on the last night, he said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir had traces of rain or snowfall during the time while as it recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against 0.4°C on the previous night, the official said.

While the ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day long harshest period of winter ended on January 30, Kashmir is under the grip of the 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ which would be followed by 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.

Jammu recorded a low of 7.0°C against previous night’s 10.0°C. The temperature was 1.4°C below normal for the J&K’s winter capital during this time of the year, he said.
Banihal recorded a low of 0.0°C, Katra had a minimum of 7.0°C while Bhaderwah recorded a low of 0.0°C, the official said.

Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 13.4°C against last night’s minus 11°C while mercury at automatic station in Kargil settled at minus 14.0°C. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a low of minus 9.3°C against last night’s minus 11.4°C, official said.

The weatherman has forecast “erratic weather” with occasional snowfall at scattered places till February 8.

For the next 24 hours, light rain or snowfall has been forecast at scattered places.

“Light rain and snow is also most likely at scattered places during February 6 to 7,” he said, adding, “Overall, weather likely to remain (erratic) partly to generally cloudy with occasional light snowfall at scattered places till February 8.” (GNS)
