Intense cold conditions prevailed in J&K and Ladakh with Gulmarg, the world famous skiing resort, being the coldest place in the Kashmir Valley.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that the minimum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, settled at minus 2.7°C, up by one degree Celsius from last night but minus 0.6°C below normal for this time of the year.

Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan, which started from December 21. It is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 11.0°C against minus 11.5°C on the previous night, he said. The temperature was minus 3.1°C below normal for this time of the year in the famous resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 9.4°C against minus 11.6°C last night, he said.

Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 5.8°C against minus 5.3°C on the previous night, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.1°C against minus 7.2°C on the previous night, the official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 2.5°C against minus 5.5°C on the previous night, the official said.

Jammu recorded a low of 5.5°C against previous night’s 5.8°C which is minus 1.5°C below normal for the J&K’s winter capital during this time of the year, he said.
Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.0°C, Katra 5.5°C and Bhaderwah saw a minimum of minus 2.7°C, the official said.

Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 15.5°C against last night’s minus 13.9°C while mercury at automatic station in Kargil settled at minus 16.9°C. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a low of minus 21.9°C against last night’s minus 21.9°C, official said.

The weatherman has forecast dry weather at most places in Jammu and Kashmir till January 16. (GNS)

Policeman and a JeM militant were killed while as three army troopers and two civilians were also injured in ongoing encounter in Pariwan area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday.

Quoting IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar, the Kashmir Police Zone wrote on Twitter, “One police personnel SgCt Rohit Chhib attained martyrdom, 03 Army soldiers got injured. 02 civilians also got minor injuries. 01 militant of militant outfit JeM killed. Operation continues,”.

Earlier a joint team of Police, army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

As the joint team of Police approached towards suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces triggering off a gunfight.(GNS)

In order to restraint the spread of Covid-19 and to sensitize the community members about CAB, Police in Kulgam distributed face masks among the general public.

On the directions of SSP Kulgam Dr G.V.Sundeep-IPS, a massive drive was conducted to create awareness among general public of the District regarding pandemic disease Covid-19.

The drive was started from GDC Kulgam and marched through link roads of Kulgam, Main Market Kulgam upto Qazigund in which several officers/officials including DySP Hqrs Kulgam along with SHO PS Kulgam participated.

During drive face masks and sanitizers were distributed among the general public. General public were also advised to get vaccinated and not to pay heed to rumours being circulated by miscreants on social media for not taking this vaccine as it can be harmful. They were also advised to follow SOPs related to Covid-19 issued by the Government of UT J&K strictly and regularly.

Community members have appreciated and applauded the role of Police in rendering such services to the general public.

As part of weekly Block Diwas initiative, the Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Ganderbal, Pir Muzaffar today conducted an interaction programme with the PRI representatives of block Lar at Conference Hall of Mini Secretariat, here.

During the interaction programme, Sarpanchs and Panchs of block Lar apprised the ADDC about various basic issues related to revenue, augmentation of water supply and electricity, improvement of roads besides other demands of public importance.

The ADDC patiently listened to all the issues and demands put forth by the PRIs and directed the concerned officers to prepare a list of issues/grievances raised and pertaining to their departments that should be resolved at an earliest and resolution shall be shared with the PRIs.

Meanwhile, the ADDC also enquired about the status of ongoing works in block Lar and directed the BDO to ensure monitoring of these works by way of carrying regular field visits and urged PRIs to play their active role in monitoring of ongoing works in their Panchayats and sought their cooperation for timely completion of these works.

He also urged the PRIs to aware people in the concerned Halqas about the Covid protocols and other SOPs so that threat of Covid 3rd wave is mitigated in the district.

Among others, the interaction programme was attended by CPO, ACP, ASP, Ex. Engineers of various wings, DMO, Dy. CEO, BDO Lar and others concerned.

Gohar said the Adminstration with their liaison and if any favour is required by them for solving any problem of a particular area from State President,General Secretary,will welcome with open heart.

Continuing its anti encroachment drive to retrieve the State/Kahchari land from the land possession in District Srinagar, the District Administration on the directions of Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar Mohammad Aijaz, today  launched a major anti-encroachment drive in various parts of the District and retrieved over  200 Kanal of State land worth  crores of rupees.

The Revenue Officers/Officials headed by respective Tehsildars of Srinagar District conducted an anti-encroachment drive in the Tehsils of Pantha Chowk, Harwan and South Srinagar.

The major chunk of 113 kanals of state land was retrieved by demolition of wire fencing and concrete walls at zawoora in  Panthachowk Tehsil.
Similarly, over 70 kanals of State land was retrieved in Saidpora bala in Harwan Tehsil. While two kanals of prominent land of high market value was also retrieved in Bagh Nandsing in Tehsil South Srinagar.
Besides, four 4 kanals and 2 Marla’s of kacharai land was also evicted at prime location of Sonwar area in Tehsil South.

Speaking about the preservation of Government land, the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar said anti-encroachment drives will continue in all the parts of the district to retrieve entire State and Kahcharai lands encroached by the land grabbers. He said involvement in land encroachment will be dealt with sternly as per the law.

The DC sought cooperation of the general public in its action against encroachments and also warned of action under CrPC in matters of encroachment on State/kahcharie lands.

The DC also asked encroachers state/kacharie land to voluntarily relinquish the illegal possession else action as warranted under law shall be initiated against them, besides retrieval of all such land will be taken by district administration.

The DC has directed for erecting signage boards on the land retrieved.

Meanwhile, the local people of these areas applauded the District Administration for removal of illegal occupation on land and appealed for further action against all such encroachments.

A video went viral on social media couple of days ago, an elderly destitute women was seen pleading that she has nobody to take care and has no family/relatives and is homeles since last about 20 years.

The woman was appealing for providing a shelter to her so that she could spend her rest of life there particularly during the ongoing harsh winter season.

Seeing her plight through a viral video, the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad personally visited the spot where the elderly lady was temporarily holding shelter and spoke to her to register her grievances.

The DC made all arrangements for the lady and provided a room with washroom and other required facilities so that she can live a better life there, besides arrangements for daily food requirements.

The lady expressed her gratitude to the DC for his compassionate approach and prayed for his long and healthy life.

Meanwhile, the locals also hailed the DC for his act of kindness and humanity.
