Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday reported 1148 fresh coronavirus positive cases, 442 more than the previous day’s tally, while two persons succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, officials said.

They said that 640 of the cases were reported from Jammu Division and 508 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall tally to 346506. Among others, the fresh cases include 13 doctors, 12 CRPF troopers and as many as J&K Police personnel.

Giving district-wise details, officials told GNS that Srinagar reported 256 cases, Baramulla 94, Budgam 59, Pulwama 12, Kupwara 30, Anantnag 18, Bandipora 19, Ganderbal 5, Kulgam 13, Shopian 2, Jammu 301, Udhampur 77, Rajouri 29, Doda 10, Kathua 64, Samba 26, Kishtwar 4, Poonch 45, Ramban 12 and Reasi 71.

There were two deaths, both from Jammu division, due to the virus during the last 24 hours, they said. So far 4546 persons—2211 in Jammu and 2335 in Kashmir—have died due to the virus, they said.

In last 24 hours, they said, 360 patients—245 from Jammu and 115 from Kashmir recovered. So far 337150 have recovered, leaving active case tally at 4810—2676 in Jammu and 2134 in Kashmir.

They said there was no new confirmed case of mucormycosis (black fungus) reported today. So far 51 black fungus cases have been confirmed in J&K, the officials said.

They also informed that 90634 doses of covid-19 vaccine were administered during the time in J&K. (GNS)

Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Monday expressed deep shock and grief over the demise of mother of former DIG and CEO JKCA Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari who today passed away at her residence in Shivpora-Srinagar.

In a condolence message issued here, Bukhari termed the demise as a personal and family loss while describing the departed soul a pious and compassionate human being whose absence will be felt dearly by the entire family.

“On behalf of my family and Apni Party, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, relatives and acquaintances especially Ashiq Sahib at this time of grief. No words of sympathy can ever compensate for this colossal loss,” he said.

Bukhari prayed that Almighty Allah bestows peace and forgiveness to the departed soul and endurance to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

Besides Bukhari, Apni Party leadership also conveyed its profound condolences with the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.

Amid rises in covid-19 cases with 687 of them confirmed in last 24 hours and 2226 in last four days, government on Sunday barred in-person teaching in colleges, schools, Polytechnics, ITIs, Coaching Centres for Civil Services, Engineering or NEET etc. They have been asked to adopt online medium of teaching, according to an order by State Executive Committee headed by the Chief Secretary.

The educational institutions have been permitted to direct attendance of vaccinated staff for administrative purposes only. “The Head of the institution must ensure that guidelines related to social distancing and Covid Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) are strictly followed.”

Night Curfew shall continue to remain in force in all Districts from 9 pm to 6 am with complete restriction on non-essential movement, reads the order, a copy of which lies with GNS.

The maximum number of people permitted to attend any indoor or outdoor gatherings have been “strictly” restricted to 25.

“Banquet Halls in all the Districts of J&K are permitted to allow gathering up to 25 vaccinated persons (with verifiable RT-PCR or RAT not older than 72 hours) or 25% of the authorised capacity (whichever is less), preferably in open spaces.”

Cinema halls, theatres, multiplexes, restaurants, clubs, gymnasiums and swimming pools have been permitted to function at 25% of the authorised capacity with due precautions such as CAB and adherence to SOP.

“All Deputy Commissioners shall intensify testing and ensure full utilisation of available RT-PCR and RAT capacities. There shall be no drop in testing levels.”

Chief Medical Officers of all districts have been asked to submit a daily report regarding the utilisation of available RT-PCR capacities to the District Magistrates concerned. Besides, District Magistrates shall also go for capacity expansion of the RT-PCR testing as per the requirement, the order said.

“The Deputy Commissioners shall also focus on the positivity rates of the Medical- Blocks under their jurisdictions. Intensified measures related to Covid management and restriction of activities shall be undertaken in these Blocks.”

There shall be renewed focus on Panchayat level and Medical Block mapping of cases, it said. “Effective micro-containment zones shall be constituted wherever number of Covid-19 Positive cases reaches 3 or above.

“Enforcement of Covid Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) is critical in determining the need for additional restrictions. The District Magistrates of J&K shall strictly ensure that there is full compliance to CAB and defaulters are firmly dealt with under relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act and the Indian Penal Code.”

All the Government Department(s)/Office(s) shall minimise conducting in-person meetings/ interactions etc, it said. “All Administrative Secretaries/ Head of the Department(s)/ Institution shall ensure optimal use of virtual mode for conducting official meetings etc.”

Market Associations to ensure that guidelines related to social distancing and Covid Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) are strictly followed in the markets. “Gathering at shops should not be allowed. Furthermore, no shops will cater to customers without mask.” (GNS)

  • In telltale signs of a third wave of covid infections, rises in virus cases continued in Jammu and Kashmir as 687 of them were confirmed in last 24 hours while three persons succumbed to the pathogen during the time, officials said on Sunday.

437 of the fresh cases were reported from Jammu division and 250 from Kashmir, taking the overall tally to 344652.

There were three deaths, all from Jammu division, due to the virus during the last 24 hours, they said. So far 4540 persons—2206 in Jammu and 2334 in Kashmir—have died due to the virus, they said.

Giving district-wise details, officials told GNS that Srinagar reported 131 cases, Baramulla 42, Budgam 50, Pulwama 10, Kupwara 2, Anantnag 3, Bandipora 4, Ganderbal 5, Kulgam 3, Shopian 0, Jammu 292, Udhampur 7, Rajouri 12, Doda 12, Kathua 39, Samba 16, Kishtwar 1, Poonch 8, Ramban 25and Reasi 26.

In last 24 hours, they said, 135 patients—52 from Jammu and 83 from Kashmir. So far 336581 patients have recovered, leaving active case tally at 3531—2032 in Jammu and 1499 in Kashmir.

They said there was no new confirmed case of mucormycosis (black fungus) reported today. So far 51 black fungus cases have been confirmed in J&K, the officials said.

They also informed that 52543 doses of covid-19 vaccine were administered during the time in J&K. (GNS)

General officer Commanding (GoC) of army’s Srinagar—based 15 Corps Lieutenant General D P Pandey visited Gurduwara Chattipadhshai in Rainawari area of old Srinagar on the occasion of Guru Gobind Singhji  Jayanti.

“I have visited every religious place in Kashmir, but wanted to visit this Gurduwara too,” said GoC Panday, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

He said his message to youth of Kashmir especially Srinagar need to change the narrative that existed for years and they should follow narrative of peace and development so that every face smiles.

At Gurduwara, GoC said he prayed for peace and development of Kashmir. He said that the army was not doing any favour to people by conducting rescue operations in snow—bound areas. “It is in our blood to serve people,” he said—(KNO)

India reported 1,59,632 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the daily positivity rate in the country to 10.21 per cent, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

With this, the COVID-19 tally has risen to 35,528,004 in the country.
According to the Health Ministry, a total of 3,623 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus have been reported in India so far. The number of recovered patients from the variant rises to 1,409.

Maharashtra accounts for the highest number of Omicron cases (1009), followed by Delhi (513) and Karnataka (441).
The Ministry further informed that the active caseload in the country currently stands at 5,90,611 which accounts for 1.66 per cent of the country’s total number of cases.

The weekly positivity rate currently is at 6.77 per cent, while the daily positivity rate stands at 10.21 per cent.
As many as 40,863 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours. The cumulative tally of COVID recovered patients now stands at 3,44,53,603. The recovery rate is at 96.98 per cent.

The country also reported 327 new deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 4,83,790.
India conducted 15,63,566 COVID-19 tests in the last 24 hours. The country has conducted 69,00,34,525 tests so far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data.

India has administered a total of 151.58 crore vaccine doses so far under Nationwide Vaccination Drive.
The COVID vaccination drive began on January 16, 2021. 1,51,57,60.645 people have been vaccinated in the country so far. 89,28,316 doses were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.

After days of snowfall and rains, weather improved in J&K and Ladakh even as night temperature recorded a drop with mercury settling at minus 10.0°C at the world famous skiing resort of Gulmarg on Sunday.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that as expected, weather improved significantly in J&K and Ladakh. “Currently weather is partly cloudy in J&K and generally cloudy in Ladakh,” he said, adding, “Except isolated incidences of accidents, there was no report of any major weather related events during this spell of western disturbance.”

He said Srinagar, with snowfall of 4.2cms in last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, recorded a low of 0.3°C against previous night’s 0.2°C. It was 2.1°C above normal for this time of the year in the summer capital of J&K, he said.

Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan, which started from December 21. It is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.

Gulmarg, having 15cms of fresh snowfall during the time, recorded plunge in temperature as mercury settled at minus 10.0°C against minus 4.6°C on the previous night at the world famous resort, he said.

Qazigund with 14cms of snow in the last 24 hours recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against 0.0°C on the previous night in the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir had 16.8cms of snowfall during the time and recorded a low of minus 1.8°C against minus 0.2°C on previous night, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, had 12cms of snow during the time and recorded a low of minus 2.3°C against minus 0.9°C on previous night, the official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir, had 4.1cms of fresh snowfall during the time and recorded a minimum of minus 0.6°C against 0.0°C as on the previous night, the official said.

Jammu had 28.4mm rain and recorded a low of 6.8°C against previous night’s 10.6°C and normal of 7.3°C for the J&K’s winter capital during this time of the year, he said.

Banihal had 19.8cms of snowfall and recorded a low of minus 4.4°C while Batote and Bhaderwah with 24.5cms and 20.3cms of snowfall, recorded minimum of minus 1.8°C and minus 0.2°C respectively, the official said.

Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 8.2°C against last night’s 9.7°C while mercury at automatic station in Kargil settled at minus 7.0°C and minus7.3°C at Drass, the official said. (GNS)

Srinagar, Jan 9 : With the improvement in weather, flight operations resumed at Srinagar international airport on Sunday.

 

“After a full day of snowfall (on Saturday) and no operations, first flight lands at our airport today,” AAI said in a tweet on Sunday.

 

Earlier, airport authorities cleared thin layer of ice on runway to prevent aircraft from skidding.

 

Since January 4th, there were 134 flight cancellations to and fro Airport.

 

As reported by GNS, while 43 flights were cancelled on Saturday, 6 each could not operate on Thursday and Friday. 42 flights were cancelled on Tuesday while many as 37 could not operate on Wednesday.

 

“The passengers of all those flights are being accommodated now. The new bookings will open after clearing the backlog,” the AAI said.

 

Meanwhile, Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the world, remained closed for traffic on Sunday as heavy rains and snowfall led to blockades at number of places along the 270-km stretch, officials said.

 

The authorities have already announced suspension of the vehicular movement on the thoroughfare and said that efforts are underway to clear it.

 

People have been advised not to undertake any journey on the highway till the restoration work was complete and surface was traffic worthy. The traffic plied on Friday before fresh weather system led to its closure again. (GNS)
