A massive fire has broken out inside ‘Sherwani Hall’ in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Reports reaching GNS said that the fire broke out around 2:15 PM this afternoon inside the structure –used as banquet hall for political and social functions.
A Fire and Emergency Department official confirming it told GNS that men and machinery were on job to contain spread of the blaze. (GNS)

Body of a Kashmiri MBBS student, who died in a Bangladesh College on Wednesday, reached her native village in Budgam on Saturday, officials said.
An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the body of Seema Zehra, a resident of Zabar Mohalla in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district, reached her home on late Saturday evening where her last rites were performed.
Seema was a 2nd year student at Addin Sakina Medical College Jessore , Bangladesh and died on January 12 at her College campus.
Arrangements were made to airlift the body from Bangladesh to Srinagar after Jammu Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha assured the family of all possible help to bring back the student’s mortal remains, the officials said—(KNO)
The upsurge in Covid-19 infection continued unabated in Jammu and Kashmir as 3251 new cases have been reported while four persons succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, officials said on Saturday.
They said that 1129 of the cases were reported from Jammu Division and 2122 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall tally to 355874.
There were also four deaths in the last 24 hours, two each from Jammu division and Kashmir Valley. So far 4561 people have succumbed to the virus and include 2218 in Jammu and 2343 in Kashmir.

Besides, they said, 390 Covid-19 patients recovered during the time—239 from Jammu Division and 151 from Kashmir. So far 338453 people have recovered, leaving active case tally at 12860 —5690 in Jammu and 7170 in Kashmir.
They said there was no new confirmed case of mucormycosis (black fungus) reported today. So far 51 black fungus cases have been confirmed in J&K, the officials said.
They also informed that 62407 doses of covid-19 vaccine were administered during the time in J&K. (GNS)

Baramulla, January 15: In a bid to provide a platform where public functionaries can deliberate and discuss different means and modalities for upscaling the indicators of socio-economic development, Country’s top most think tank NITI Aayog today organized a virtual panel discussion under the banner of “Aspirational Districts Forum” in which Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Bhupinder Kumar participated.
Bhupinder Kumar was the sole representative from the UT of J&K and the only Deputy Commissioner among all the DCs of the country. He was specially invited in the event as the Baramulla district has recorded overwhelming and remarkable performance thrice in subsequent NITI Aayog’s delta rankings.
At the outset, CEO Amitabh Kant presented the keynote address wherein he underlined several policy objectives envisaged under the Aspirational Districts programme. He welcomed all the participants besides extending warm applause and appreciations to DC Baramulla for excelling and recording marvellous performance among all the aspirational districts of the country.
Bhupinder Kumar, in his address gave a detailed sketch of developmental journey of Baramulla district and shared his valuable experience while achieving milestones in public service delivery which enabled the district to stand at the apex in competitive federalism.
While presenting his valuable suggestions and feedback for achieving development oriented outcomes, the DC also put forth some issues and challenges confronting the pace of development. He added that there is a dire need to upgrade basic infrastructure in government health institutions as the people largely prefer private sector for primary as well as secondary healthcare services. He further said that this has increased the out of pocket expenditure which has it serious implications on the marginal and weaker sections of the society.
The Deputy Commissioner also presented an overview of developmental profile more especially in health and other vital sectors and said that better outcomes were achieved through collaborative approach among various stakeholders. He said that Rs 16 Crore was provided to the district as an incentive grant which was by and large utilised on upgrading basic infrastructure having their impact on the livelihoods of common people.

Cluster University Srinagar on Saturday deferred till further orders all the examinations of the varsity which were scheduled to begin next week.
“This is notified for the information of concerned that all the examinations of Cluster University Srinagar scheduled from 17th of January 2022 have been deferred till further orders,” read an order by Cluster University Kashmir, a copy of which lies with GNS. “The decision has been taken in view of the surge in COVID cases.”
Revised schedule for these examinations shall be notified separately, the order reads further. “Students are advised to remain in touch with the University official website (www.cusrinagar.edu.in) for further detail.” (GNS)
